I recently purchased a palmOne Tungsten | E2 PDA. I have been a long-time Palm user and despite the aesthetic temptings of the Windows Mobile operating system, I will continue to be a Palm user so long as it is available. As a successor to and replacement for the Tungsten | E, my research had shown that with my E2 I would be getting a better high resolution color display, an updated operating system and a longer lasting battery rolled into the same design as its attractive prototype.
Past use of the palmOne Treo 650, the Samsung i500 and i600 and the Audiovox PPC6600 had gotten me very familiar with the use of the headset and hands-free profiles of Bluetooth technology. But, what I was missing out on was the DUN profile, sometimes reffered to as DNP (dial-up networking profile). Having a new fancy-schmancy PDA which could make use of this DUN profile, I started doing some research. What I saw from palmOne's website, however, seemed to indicate that connection between the E2 and a Sprint handset was not possible. Not one to take no for an answer, I forged ahead anyways and eventually discovered the solution.
For my initial trial run I used a coworker's Sprint-powered LG 325. To prepare the 325 for pairing, I followed these steps:
- Select Menu
- Select Settings
- Select Bluetooth
- Set visibility to "Show Always"
- Select "Enable Bluetooth"
- Select "Add New," and choose "Waiting for Pairing
In order to prepare the Tungsten for pairing, I followed the steps below:
- From Home, select the Bluetooth icon
- Change status to "On"
- Give your device a name (like Meg's E2)
- Set Discoverable to "Yes"
- Select "Setup Devices"
- Select "Trusted Devices"
- Select "Add Device"

At this point, my E2 recognized my nearby 325. It appeared in my trusted devices list as "PM-325." At this stage, both devices were asking for a passkey. As with Bluetooth headsets, this passkey is 0000. I entered "0000" into the 325 and hit "OK" and then entered "0000" into the E2 and selected "Accept" If you can get pairing to complete, you're in the clear.
The next step involves your DUN settings. All of this information is entered into the E2.
- From Home, select the Preferences icon
- Select Network and click "New" button
- Name this service (I named mine "Sprint")
- Enter the Username "qnc"
- Enter the Password "qnc"
- Select Connection and scroll down to Edit Connections
- Select New and name this connection ("LG325" in my case)
- Set this connection to Connect to "Phone"
- Via Bluetooth
- Select Device and choose the 325 from the list
- Under Model, choose UPDD and tap "Done"
- Select Phone and enter the number #777
- Uncheck Dial prefix, Disable call waiting, and Use calling card
- Tap OK and then hit Connect
At this point I saw the LG 325 dialing up, signing on and establishing my connection. From there I was able to connect to the web via Blazer and retrieve my VersaMail. Wonderful stuff. Shortly after, we were able to set Daniel's Samsung A940 and his E2 to connect as well, so... IT CAN BE DONE! And here in Atlanta where EVDO is available, it's amazingly fast.
Should you continue to have errors, try updating your Vision profile. (Under most phones you can do this from Menu | Settings | PCS Vision and selecting "Update Vision Profile."
Best of luck, and feel free to contact me if you have any questions.
